What is the difference between private yoga and a yoga class?

A group yoga class is general: general instruction for a broad audience. During private sessions, we will talk about your unique body, your unique challenges, your unique goals, and create a program specifically tailored *to you.* Because of this, you will make progress much faster, and receive much more attention and feedback than you would in a normal yoga class.

Desert Canyon Landscape

1. Maybe you don't like practicing in front of a group of people. Maybe you'd rather practice in private

2. Maybe yoga moves too quickly for your preferences, and you'd rather slow down, ask questions, break things down, make sure you're really understanding and moving with correct alignment.

3. Maybe you have specific flexibility/mobility goals and are ready to take them seriously. Maybe you've had injuries in the past and want to make sure you're practicing safely by getting some guidance

Why would I choose private yoga lessons instead of going to a yoga class?

Desert

Can't I teach myself how to stretch for free online?

Maybe, but have you? Having someone respond to your body in real time giving cues tailored to your unique needs will lead you to faster and deeper progress. I have over 19 years of experience guiding bodies. You could think of me as like coach: here to compassionately support you doing what your body needs from you. I will make sure you show up for yourself, and take the steps you need to take to feel the way you want to feel in your body and move the way you want to move.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is your travel area?

I will travel anywhere in Philadelphia and within a 10 mile radius around it. If you're thinking you might be a little far for me, let's chat and see!

Do you provide a yoga mat and props?

I can absolutely provide yoga mats and props if need be! You may wish to have your own so that you can practice in between our sessions to really optimize the speed of your progress, but that is up to you! You can also practice quite comfortably on a carpeted floor; whatever works for you.

Is virtual private yoga as good as private yoga in-person?

The convenience of virtual sessions can outweigh the benefit hands on adjustments and physical presence. I have seen incredible results from my online sessions through verbal cueing and close attention to detail online. Whether you meet with me online or in person, our private sessions together will still give you much more focused attention and much faster results than you get in a group yoga class. You will also get that same accountability of having me in your calendar, making sure you're progressing towards your goals, showing up for yourself, and taking care of yourself.

How often should I schedule private yoga? Can I have just one lesson?

This depends: for optimal progression speed through your flexibility journey, training 3x a week is ideal. This could be with me, or it could be on your own. If you feel self-motivated and are just looking to break through some road blocks that have you stumped, we could meet just once and I can give you exercises to work through on your own. If part of this decision is to ensure you are accountable to yourself, I would suggest we meet at least once a week. It all depends on you and your needs. I'd be happy to talk it through with you on a discovery call.

What is your cancellation policy?

I require 24 hours' notice for any cancellations or rescheduling to avoid being charged for the session. Sales are final for sessions and session packages, but you are welcome to reschedule if you need to within the time frame that the package is valid for.

Can I try a group class with you first?

Absolutely! You could check out my schedule here, or message me if there's nothing coming up at the moment. You could also try a pre-recorded class on-demand here on my website! Click here to try an online class with me. Note that private sessions will be quite different from this type of class format, however, because private sessions are much more of a dialogue where I'll be responding to your body in real time.

I am recovering from injury or surgery. Is private yoga a good option for me?

Probably, yes! You may want to check with your doctor/physical therapist first, but strenghtening the mind-body connection is extremely helpful for recovering from injuries. I have found yoga to be more helpful than any other practice for this purpose. Depending on the severity, our work may be very subtle or more mental, focusing on proprioception. Let's talk.

I have a dog or a cat, will that be a problem?

No problem at all. Depending on how much attention they are asking your, you may want to keep them in a separate room during our time together, but again, that's up to you. Animals do tend to be quite excited to see their people joining them on the floor! Regarding animal allergies, I use separate blankets for each client and clean props between sessions. However, if you have severe animal allergies, I will probably suggest buying your own props right away so you can avoid using props that may have come in contact with a pet.

I have a health problem, injury or disease. Will yoga cure it?

Yoga is not a cure-all, and I cannot guarantee cures. Yoga is a mind-body practice that can get you in touch with and even amplify your own innate healing ability. Yoga has been proven to help with stress, anxiety, mood, depression, cognitive function, pain, cardiovascular health, mobility, strength, respiratory function, and more. These benefits can alleviate symptoms of many injuries and illnesses.

I've never done Yoga before, is this for me?

Absolutely! I love working with people new to the practice. If you are looking to improve mobility, flexibility, strength, and/or mental clarity, this is a great choice, regardless of any prior experience you may or may not have.

Who are private Yoga lessons for?

Private yoga lessons are a great way to receive personalized attention, whether you're a complete beginner looking to build a strong foundation, an experienced yogi aiming to deepen your practice, or someone recovering from an injury who needs a tailored and safe practice.

Do I need a separate room for my yoga practice?

No, you do not! Yoga can be done anywhere with a footprint of maybe 4'x7'. In the living room, office, even entryway or kitchen if need be! My goal is to create a little sanctuary for us, wherever we are. I bring music, incense or essential oils and props to set up a yoga-studio like experience in your home or office - wherever we are! All you need is room for your yoga mat.

I have kids, will they be too much of a distraction?

In short, no; no problem. My goal is to meet you where you're at, and provide the best experience that I can. If fitting your practice into your life means that there are kids around who may need to interrupt us once in a while, that's totally fine! I think can be quite beneficial for kids to see their parents taking care of themselves. If you would like create a more solitary space, we can also discuss meeting in my home studio, or at AFC Fitness in Bala Cynwyd.

What supplies do I need?

There are no supplies that you need, other than a small amount of space for us to practice in. I can bring any and all additional props that we might need. You may want to invest in a yoga mat for yourself (they can be quite inexpensive), but it is not required; I am happy to provide one.

What should I expect during a session?

We'll start with a check-in to see how you're feeling, what's being going on for you in your body, and see if there's a particular focus you'd like us to take for the day. Then we'll then move through a practice tailored to you, focusing on alignment, breath, and movement. The session will conclude with a short relaxation period and a discussion around what you might benefit from working on between now and our next session.

What are the benefits of a private lesson?

Unlike a group class, a private session is designed entirely around your unique needs and goals. We can focus on specific poses, address physical limitations, explore different breathing techniques, or simply practice in a setting that's comfortable and convenient for you.
