The way that Yoga nidra promotes healing in the physical body is by walking the brain down into deeper and slower brain wave states, in the same way that your brain naturally does this as you fall sleep. With practice, practitioners are able to enter the deepest phase of sleep where the while maintaining trace levels of awareness.
Deep sleep, or Stage 3 Non-REM (NREM) sleep, is the primary, most restorative phase where the body undergoes maximum physical repair, immune system strengthening, and tissue regeneration. During this stage, the body releases growth hormones that repair muscles, build bone, and heal injuries. By practicing yoga nidra, you can reach this stage of sleep in shorter time frame, and with a greater frequency if you choose to practice daily, or even multiple times a day.
