This yoga nidra practice is intended to promote healing in the knees and ankles.

In yogic philosophy, we understand that there are different layers of reality, and different layers of who we are. These are the pancha maya koshas or “the 5 sheaths:” the physical layer, the energetic layer, the emotional layer, the mental layer, and transcendent field within which all of these other layers exist. Nothing can occur in isolation; everything that happens to us is happening in all 5 of these layers.

So when we experience pain and injury, sometimes the source for this physical rupture can originate in a non-physical layer. The chakra system is a powerful tool for tracing the symbolic origins of our physical maladies. The knees and ankles are related to muladara chakra, the root chakra, which represents our most basic needs and stability. This is the center that connects us to the material world and has to do with our earliest stages of development. The specific side of the body where the injury occurs has its own symbolic significance as well.

The body is always trying to reach a state of equilibrium. We can amplify and accelerate this innate healing ability by increasing both the quality and quantity of consciousness that we bring to all 5 of these layers within the region of our injury. That is what this yoga nidra practice will guide you through.

Find a comfortable, symmetrical laying down position to begin. If possible, lay on your back on your bed or a comfy couch with pillows under the head and knees, an eye covering to block out any light, and a blanket for warmth.
